The 2013 National Training Seminar (NTS) theme reinforced that now, just as the past, our students and youth need a national-level voice to continue speaking on their behalf. Secretary of Defense, The Honorable Chuck Hagel reinforced that point as he provided the final session remarks at NTS and spoke on many of the current buzz topics to include sequestration and furloughs, and took the opportunity to announce the 2013 Department of Defense educational partnership grants worth nearly $20 million. Hagel noted MCEC being a critical partner in the Joining Forces initiative “Operation Educate the Educators”* and emphasized to MCEC “You help give children a voice, one that needs to be heard. And as Linda said, that is a responsibility that is second to none for all of us. And we have, as parents, no higher responsibility. As leaders, we have no higher responsibility. So thank you, and I am privileged to be here today.

That pressure would challenge most adults, but for Josh and nearly 2 million kids with at least one parent serving in the military, it's a stark reality.

According to a May 16, 2013 article published by Time.com “The Pentagon’s Letting Down Our Kids.” Jeremy Hilton, who wrote the article, is a Navy Veteran. In 2012, he was the Armed Forces Insurance Military Spouse of the Year. Mr. Hilton states that a class action lawsuit was filed in 2010 by military families against the Department of Defense (DoD) and TRICARE (the military healthcare insurance program) for failing to provide medically-appropriate behavioral health care for military children with autism. A federal judge in July found in favor of the military families. The DoD filed an appeal.
