Secretary of Defense cancels furloughs for DoDEA

We applaud Secretary Hagel's continued efforts to minimize the impacts of sequestration.  His recent memorandum to key leaders directs that furloughs for most DoD civilians be reduced from 11 days to six days.  However, he further directs one specific exception and that is the cancellation of all furloughs for Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) instructional and support staff on 10-month contracts.  We greatly appreciate his recognition of the vital importance of education for military-connected children and most especially his direct action to keep teachers in the classroom.  While sequestration continues to have a negative impact in many ways regarding the well-being of military families, this specific guidance will ensure a creditable year of schooling for military-connected students.
