Early Literacy - Growing, Learning, Understanding Kits

Growing, Learning, Understanding (GLU) - Making Meaning Through Early Literacy was designed by the Military Child Education Coalition to develop early literacy skills in children from birth through second grade. With kits covering a range of themes and literacies, GLU helps children make meaning of the world around them. From The Kissing Hand Kit, which explores family traditions and staying connected, to the Night Catch Kit, which helps children understand concepts like time and distance while developing science literacy, the kits speak to the developmental needs of all children while addressing the specific circumstances of children whose parents serve in the military.

All GLU Kits are built around carefully chosen resources that parents and child care providers can expand upon, adapt to the needs of their own children, and use over and over again as children continue to grow and learn.

GLU Kits include ideas and activities adaptable to a range of ages and developmental levels. Parents and care providers are encouraged to utilize careful observation and understanding of their own children, as well as research and information regarding the development of young children, as they explore the kits, use the activities, read the books, and most of all, have fun learning together.

GLU Kits that are available are the following:
