Military Support
Below are ideas for military installations to implement in order to help meet the educational needs of military children.
Before and After School Care Programs
Installation supported care programs for children are important. Fort Knox, Kentucky provides a computer lab and after school homework center for the installation's children. This program is the only nationally accredited program of its type in the State of Kentucky and only one of four in the Army.
Web Sites
Link web sites of local military installations with local school districts to better help parents and children learn about new schools. Local school districts may not have the technology and/or expertise to create a web page. If you have a partnership program, this may be one area where you can support the local school/district.
Parent/Teacher Conferencing
One very large military installation supports parent involvement by allowing the military parent to attend parent conferencing during the work day. This is important because studies have shown that children of involved parents score higher on standardized test scores. At one school district, the scores were as much as 3% to 5% higher in their middle school population.
