MCEC in the News
The Christian Science Monitor featured MCEC's National Guard and Reserve training in an article about organizations that aid military families. The December 7, 2006, article was a follow-up to MCEC's Supporting the Children and Families of the National Guard and Reserve Institute, where MCEC trainers taught Massachusetts educators how to help children whose loved ones have become "suddenly military."
North Carolina Governor Michael Easley Supports MCEC
On December 12, 2006, North Carolina Gov. Michael Easley attended MCEC’s Supporting the Children and Families of the National Guard and Reserve Institute in Raleigh. Gov. Easley stated that North Carolina is a strong believer in MCEC's mission and announced that he will allocate funds for additional National Guard and Reserve Institutes in the state's 2007 budget.

Additionally, North Carolina Public Radio attended the institute and aired a story about educators learning about the unique challenges that military families face. Highlights from the story include an in-depth look at educators role-playing in order to better understand what military students in their communities are experiencing and how to be sensitive to their unique needs.

The Art of Being a Military Child
MCEC announces that it will launch its first annual military child art festival titled "The Art of Being a Military Child." Children of military families are encouraged to participate and submit art work, essays, poetry, or films about what life is like growing up in a military family. Selected submissions in the visual arts will be featured in art exhibits at the Military Child Education Coalition 2007 Annual Conference in Kansas City, Missouri.

Living in the New Normal: Supporting Children Through Trauma and Loss
The Living in the New Normal: Supporting Children Through Trauma and Loss initiative is MCEC's most recent effort to support military children. Sparked by concerns about military children dealing with illness, injury or death of a parent, Living in the New Normal: Supporting Children Through Trauma and Loss was thoughtfully developed in collaboration with experts in the fields of trauma and grief, resiliency, healthcare and child development. Living in the New Normal: Supporting Children Through Trauma and Loss encourages families to ensure their children have the tools to weather life’s storms, fosters homefront efforts to support military children and provides educators and other concerned adults with information to help them support military children.

April Designated Month of the Military Child
April has been designated the Month of the Military Child. Join MCEC in recognizing our young heroes, who serve with the same resilience as their parents. Military children have received special acknowledgement each April since 1986, when Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger asked the country to recognize their important role in our armed forces. In honor of the Month of the Military Child, MCEC will distribute posters to schools across the country.
