America Reads Challenge

This grassroots national program challenges Americans to help all our children learn to read. It contains separate web pages for kids, parents, educators, and communities.
Even Start
The purpose of the National Even Start Association is to extend learning and enrich language development for children from birth to age seven and their families by building literacy skills in both parents and children. The program focuses on teaching parents literacy and parenting skills that they can use to teach their children.
Head Start
The National Head Start Association (NHSA) is a private not-for-profit membership. It serves as a national forum for the continued enhancement of Head Start services for economically disadvantaged children ages 0 through 5, and their families. Check out the families and children magazine.
High/Scope Educational Research Foundation
The High/Scope® Foundation is an independent nonprofit research, development, training, and public advocacy organization located in Ypsilanti, Michigan (1970). The Foundation's principal goals are to promote the learning and development of children worldwide from infancy through adolescence and to support and train educators and parents as they help children learn. Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

Reading Recovery was developed in New Zealand by Dr. Mary M. Clay. This is a short-term intervention on a one-to-one basis for low-achieving first graders. Students receive a half-hour lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with a specially trained instructor. Visit the site for additional information.
