MCEC Announces CEO Succession Plan

Dr. Mary Keller, after twenty years as MCEC President and Chief Executive Officer, to Retire December 2018

HARKER HEIGHTS - After more than 40 years in education, and almost 20 years as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC), Dr. Mary M. Keller announces her intention to retire in December of 2018. Military-connected children, parents, and the Board of Directors owe Dr. Keller a huge debt of gratitude for her unselfish efforts over these past 20 years. As MCEC begins its third decade of service to military-connected children, the search for a new president and CEO will begin.

MCEC Announces Transition of Chairman of the Board of Directors

HARKER HEIGHTS – Today, the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) announced a change in its board of directors, with retired Air Force Gen. William Fraser replacing retired Army Gen. Ben Griffin as chairman. Gen. Fraser assumed the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors on May 1, 2016.

MCEC Applauds Inclusion of Military Student Identifier in ESSA

WASHINGTON – The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) thanks and congratulates the members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives who voted in favor of the Every Student Succeeds Act, particularly Senators Lamar Alexander and Patty Murray and Representatives John Kline and Bobby Scott for their strong leadership on the issue. The legislation, which now goes to the President for signature, includes a military student data element that will enable military leaders, educators, and elected officials at all levels of government to understand how military-connected children are performing in school.

Budget Decisions Affect Military-Connected Children


HARKER HEIGHTS, TX- In response to proposed cuts to the fiscal year 2015 budget highlighted in remarks made by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel this week, the Military Child Education Coalition® (MCEC®) raised concern for the children of Active Duty, National Guard and Reserve service members likely to be impacted by potential cuts to force strength and programs supporting military families. During this period of transition, the Military Child Education Coalition remains focused on the implications of proposed measures for military children, parents, military installations, and communities.

MCEC Teams with Gates Foundation on Behalf of Military-Connected Children


HARKER HEIGHTS, TX - The Military Child Education Coalition is teaming with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve the likelihood that children of America’s service members and post 9/11 veterans are college and career ready. In keeping with its mission to ensure educational opportunities for the nation’s nearly 4 million military-connected children, the Military Child Education Coalition will advocate for the timely implementation of clear and consistent educational benchmarks known as the Common Core State Standards. Recognizing that “good things happen at the local level,” the MCEC will work with friends and supporters to encourage continued educational progress at the local community and state level across our nation.

Month of the Military Child and Educating the Educators

The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC), www.militarychild.org, and the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), www.aacte.org, celebrate this month as a time to recognize the courage, traits, and strength of character of the military-connected child.

Every school district in the United States has military-connected children...they are the sons and daughters of those who serve in the Active Duty, National Guard, or Reserve component of every branch of military service. They number nearly two million and that number doubles when you include the children of our veterans.

Military children live with perpetual challenges presented by frequent moves, parental deployments, and life transitions including reintegration and dealing with profoundly changed parents. Military Children Feel Impact of Budget Uncertainty

March 25, 2013

April is the Month of the Military Child; a time to recognize and appreciate military children who also serve and make sacrifices. The irony is that, after 11 years of war, separation, and hardship, this April is a time of increased stress caused by the budget uncertainty. We now have leaders who, rather than finding solutions supportive of predictability for children, are allowing a climate of uncertainty to prevail. There are over 2 million children with parents who are serving in our military —yet for each child it is personal and individual.

Military Student Transition Consultant to Serve Bossier Parish

HARKER HEIGHTS, TX, July 10, 2012 – The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) announced the addition of Georgette Price to the Military Student Transition Consultant (MSTC) program serving military families and their children in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. The program, funded through a partnership that includes the Bossier Chamber of Commerce, the Military Affairs Council, Cyber Innovation Center, Barksdale Forward, and the Greater Bossier Economic Development Foundation, embeds a carefully trained staff person within the school system.
