Pre-conference Sessions

Participants can choose from two different
professional development options in 2018:

Track One:

Traditional Professional Development (Training begins 8:30 am- 12:00 pm, Lunch from 12:00-1:30, Training resumes 1:30 pm-4:30pm)
Full Day (6 clock hours) Training in either:

  • Supporting Veterans’ Children through Transitions- This course is designed for those interested in learning how to support military-connected children and youth as their parents’ transition out of the military. Special focus is placed on the avenues of separation from the military, the unique implications of having a parent separate from the military and having a parent who is wounded, ill or injured.


  • Helping Military Children Discover their S.P.A.R.C: Strengths, Potential, Aspirations, Resourcefulness, Confidence- This training allows professionals to learn how military children can develop skills and mindsets that contribute to hardiness and growth. Identifying military children’s sparks and interests allows them to meet personal and academic goals.

*Recommended for youth-serving professionals, guidance counselors,  K-12 educators, service providers.

Track Two:

Personalized Focus
Participants may choose either one or two sessions in this track. If a participant chooses this track, they should not attend the trainings in Track One.

8:30- 11:30  
The Science of Individuality and Promoting Jaggedness in Military Children (3 clock hours)
This three hour course examines the myths of learning styles and promotes an understanding of the importance of individuality. Participants will learn about the Jaggedness Principle and how to implement strategies for promoting individuality and jaggedness in academic and social settings, in order to support success in college, career and life.

Lunch 11:30-1:00 pm

1:00 pm- 4:00 pm
Social- Emotional Learning and the Military Child (3 clock hours)
This three hour course provides an overview of social-emotional learning and the importance of creating positive learning environments. Participants will analyze current research in social-emotional learning, share ideas and create new strategies for promoting social-emotional learning in classrooms and communities.

*Attendees who complete Track One or Track Two will be eligible for the appropriate clock hours of continuing education units from IACET or NBCC, upon successful completion of the respective evaluation and quiz. The fee schedule for preconference CEUs is $12 for 3 clock hours and $25 for 6 clock hours. Preconference attendees may still apply for NTS continuing education units upon completion of the full NTS evaluation and quiz.
