Robert “Bob” Utley, Vice Chairman

Robert “Bob” Utley, Board Vice Chairman, is the Chairman of the Board for The Utley Group, a privately controlled family enterprise active in investments in real estate and operating companies since 1988. He is currently a principal in numerous real estate partnerships and major shareholder in numerous other corporations. Mr. Utley previously served as Chairman of Inland American Communities, a real estate ownership, development, and property management firm with operations nationwide. Mr. Utley led the group’s efforts with university and college communities across the nation. Mr. Utley is the former Chairman of FirstWorthing Company, a real estate investment firm that partnered with Principal Enterprise Capital, an advisor to the Washington State Investment Board, to develop and acquire multifamily and student housing properties. He sold the portfolio in early 2007.

Before selling his portfolio, Mr. Utley served as President and Chief Executive Officer of First Southwest Management, Inc., the General Partner of the Control Shareholder of First Southwest Holdings, Inc. and a major shareholder of First Southwest Holdings, Inc. First Southwest Holdings, Inc. owned a major regional broker/dealer, a national public finance advisory firm, a regional investment bank, and a fixed income asset manager.

Mr. Utley also served as Chief Executive and Director of a savings bank holding company located in New York. He has been involved in real estate, banking, and extensive investment activities for the past 35 years. During this period, he has acquired real estate, investments, and companies valued in excess of $10 billion.
Mr. Utley was a principal in an investor group, which purchased First Gibraltar Bank in 1988 through the acquisition of savings and loans with assets in excess of $24 billion. First Gibraltar Bank was subsequently sold to Bank of America in 1993 and First Gibraltar Mortgage Company sold to Chase Manhattan Bank.

Mr. Utley was also an original investor in a regional leveraged buyout firm that completed several billion in leveraged buyouts during the late 1980’s. Mr. Utley was also involved as a principal in the privatization of the two national television networks in Mexico in the early 1990s.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, he is a distinguished alumnus and is a member of UTA’s Advisory Board and Executive Committee. Mr. Utley currently serves and has served on numerous corporate and non-profit boards of directors. He is also a former Chairman of the Securities Board of the State of Texas, and former Chairman of the Higher Education Legislative Political Action Committee.  He is a Board member of ACE Solutions for our Future (higher education), and on the Board of Directors of BENS (Business Executives for National Security). Mr. Utley is a former Chairman of the Dallas Chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization, and is a member of both the World Presidents’ Organization and the Chief Executives Organization.
