Parent Educator - Fort Hood

I. Position Overview

The Parent Programs Educator (PPE) is responsible for providing workshops to Parents in the communities to which they are assigned as part of MCEC Parent Program and as directed by the Military Child Education Coalition® (MCEC®) President/CEO or Parent Programs Manager.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The PPE will serve as a collaborative, responsible and contributing member of the overall Parent Programs team conducting a number of parent workshops in the community, utilizing and following the MCEC Curriculum, and providing a variation in scheduled time and location to accommodate the participant needs. The number is to be consistent with the minimum determined/assigned by the Parent Programs Manager and may fluctuate depending on circumstances and local/organization needs. 


  1. The baseline expectation for each Parent Programs Educator, under normal circumstances, is training at least 90 parents a month and presenting at least 9 workshops per month with at least 60 hours per month.  When operating in an “open participation” environment, at least two of the workshops should be offered virtually to allow for broadest reach of content.   There may be situations where in-person workshops are not possible for a full reporting period.  In these “closed participation” situations, where participants are not permitted to gather in schools, libraries or other public venues, the expectation for a PPE is 5 virtual workshops and 60 hours per month.  In a fully virtual operating environment, there is no minimum number of attendees expected.  Workshop presentations may be in-person or virtual and include marketing available workshops to organizations that have a significant military member base.  PPE target organizations include (but are not limited to) schools (both on and off the military installation), Libraries, Boys and Girls Clubs, etc.  PPEs will focus on school-aged content, i.e. K-12+ and should limit early child-focused workshops to MCEC Tell Me A Story family literacy events.  
  2. Newly trained PPEs will shadow an experienced PPE through the first pay cycle following hire date and will study workshop outlines and materials to gain a comfort level with teaching and answering questions related to the workshop topic.   During this initial start-up period, the new PPE will market/connect with local agencies and organizations to build out the schedule for subsequent months.  This initial start-up period may be waived if the PPE is an experienced MCEC Parent Educator.
  3. PPE assigned to new communities without an existing MCEC Parent Programs presence will have 2 pay cycles before the workshop and attendee requirements take effect.  This time will allow the PPE to develop their marketing strategies and learn the initial workshop material.  The third month expectation will be 7 workshops and 70 attendees and the full expectation of 9 workshops and 90 attendees will be in effect with the 4th full month following site/program establishment.  
  4. All PPEs will participate in supervisory conference calls a minimum of one time per month.  
  5. Marketing is a significant component of the PPE duties and thorough discussion and review of individual marketing efforts will be addressed regularly to aid in outreach and connections with local organizations.
  6. PPEs will check their official MCEC e-mail daily for situational awareness and will use their personal e-mail account to correspond with potential customers.  Workshops and other events will be scheduled/confirmed using the team e-mail account for tracking purposes and collection of contact information details.
  7. PPEs will follow established monthly reporting guidelines and requirements for reports and data collection.
  8. PPEs will work synchronously with other MCEC staff in the local community, coordinating joint activities, sharing connections and brainstorming ideas to resolve challenges for military-connected children in the local area.  
  9. PPEs will participate in MCEC Professional Development Institutes and other similar events that are in the local community.  There MAY be opportunities to travel outside their local geographical area to attend or support MCEC events.   PPEs should request permission to travel outside their geographical area (beyond 30 miles), especially when attendance may interfere with their ability to deliver programming in the home community.  
  10. The MCEC Parent Programs Manager may ask PPEs to attend or support events as MCEC representatives.  
III. Position Qualifications

A minimum of:

  • Must be a Military Parent/Spouse, branch of service immaterial.
  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited College or University (may be waived based on experience as an Educator).
  • Teaching, training or counseling experience is preferred.
  • Must have personal transition experience between military duty stations involving changing schools for minor children.

Desired experience/training/knowledge/skills/abilities:

  • Leadership/Management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to utilize technology in developing presentations, analyzing information, and communicating.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and large and small group facilitation in collaborative, interactive institutes.
  • Must have enough technological expertise to work with PowerPoint, Word, and Excel and Publisher.

IV. Selection Process

Our selection process will be conducted in phases.

Phase One: Submission of cover letter and resume
Phase Two: Qualified candidates may be invited to submit further documentation prior to the telephone interview process. These individuals will also be expected to submit the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses for three professional references.
Phase Three: Based on the telephonic interview results, a select number of candidates will be invited to a face-to-face interview with the MCEC selection team.
In addition to providing resumes, references and proof of academic credentials, applicants must also submit to extensive background checks and possible fingerprinting.
