Exceptional children are defined in this course as those who need either special education services or gifted education services to maximize their individual potential. Participants will learn strategies for strengthening relationships, communication and hardiness in children with special needs as they transition from school to school. Instructional delivery options for both special education and gifted education will be covered with special emphasis on the importance of synchronization of services for exceptional needs military-connected children and youth. Topics covered include Amplified Challenges of Military-Connected Students with Exceptional Needs, Laws and Policies, The Referral Process, Communication, Fostering Hardiness in Children, and Synchronization of Services.

Face-to-Face instruction with up to 50 people per session.

Course Length:

This course includes 6 clock hours (.6 CEUs) of instruction and group work time, exclusive of breaks and lunch.


This course is designed for school counselors, educators, and others who work with military-connected children who have exceptional needs. Professionals and paraprofessionals who work with children with exceptional needs in youth organization settings and parents of children with exceptional needs will also find the course information beneficial.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify the amplified transition challenges that impact mobile military-connected students with exceptional needs.
  • Analyze processes that support transitioning children with exceptional needs.
  • Design methods to ease transitions for military children with exceptional needs.
Credit Options:

CEU - Course participants are eligible to receive .6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for this twelve clock hour course. MCEC is a National Board for Certified Counselors Approved Continuing Education provider (ACEP™) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program. These designations allow us to offer you these opportunities.

The Military Child Education Coalition is an approved continuing education provider for the Texas Education Association Provider # 501-090, Texas and other state entities.

To receive CEUs a participant must maintain 95% attendance, engage in the class activities and discussions, complete an end of course evaluation, and complete an end-of-course assessment with a minimum score of 80%. The CEU fee is $25.00.
