Join us April 19-20 in Columbia, South Carolina for the MCEC 360 Purple Star Summit and South Carolina Month of the Military Child Celebration Events.

MCEC® 360 Purple Star Summits are designed to support schools and districts that are seeking or currently hold the Purple Star Designation. Attendees will participate in sessions that provide critical learning opportunities that support Purple Star readiness in your schools and district.

This event is a collaborative effort from the South Carolina statewide coalition of the willing, with special partnerships with Richland School District Two, school liaisons, South Carolina Purple Star partners, and the South Carolina Department of Veterans Affairs. The event is open to professionals across disciplines in education, healthcare, and childcare; community stakeholders; students; and parents of our military-connected children.

The event is free of charge and includes:

  • Discussions on the Military Interstate Children's Compact Commision (MIC3) and building strong partnerships with your local installations and military organizations
  • Professional development on serving military-connected children, including Hidden Helpers
  • Interaction with state-level MCEC coordinators and school liaisons
  • MCEC Student 2 Student® training for school groups
  • MCEC Tell Me a Story® events in and English and Spanish, for parents and elementary-aged children
  • A collaborative community Month of the Military Child celebration for all ages

DAY 1

Logo-EdVenture Children's Museum

Part 1: For Students 

MCEC is conducting a Student 2 Student (S2S) training for K-12 schools. S2S is a student-led program that brings military and civilian students together to welcome new students, create a positive environment, support academic excellence, and ease transitions.

8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. EST

Edventure Children’s Museum

Training Objectives: 

  • Understand why S2S is needed in schools
  • Identify the challenges students face as they transition in or out of school 
  • Understand the S2S Core Values: Leadership, Finding the Way, Academics, Service, Relationships and 100% Acceptance 
  • Have a plan to build a strong S2S.

This training is designed for school groups. Breakfast and lunch are provided.

Continuing Education Credits: 

Upon completion of the post-training survey, participants may apply for 6 clock hours of continuing education credits for a fee of $30.00. CE credit applications must be received within 12 months from the completion of the training. 


Part 2: For Parents and Elementary-Aged Children

Join us for an evening of fun and learning with MCEC and EdVenture Columbia Children’s Museum. This Tell Me A Story (TMAS) event features the reading of Night Catch, in both English and en Español, with discussion groups and engaging activities relating to the book. Private open play during the event. Dinner is provided.

Join us for a day of professional learning — a collaborative community effort brought to you by MCEC and Hosted by Richland School District Two.

  • Professional development sessions geared to support military-connected students in your community.
  • Special guest speakers and subject matter experts
  • Resource fair
  • Collaboration and networking opportunities with other educators, professionals, parents, community military partners, and leaders in the area

Breakfast and lunch are provided.
